Time for Ethiopia to Lead the African Continent Technologically

Ethiopia’s Strategic Advantages

Observing the strides taken by Ethiopia and its pivotal role on the African Continent, particularly as the aviation hub with its prominent Ethiopian Airlines and as the administrative capital housing the African Union Headquarters, it becomes evident that the country should now accelerate its progress by embracing advanced technologies within its economy. This endeavor will not only benefit Ethiopia but will also catalyze technological growth across Africa. I will elaborate on this point in my argument below:

Seizing Opportunities

Ethiopia has positioned itself positively by being among the first nations to formally apply for a slot in BRICS – which has indeed been granted. This step now paves the way for Ethiopia to attract the aircraft manufacturing industry, starting with the production of light aircraft and gradually expanding to narrow-body aircraft. This is particularly relevant given that we now live in an era where countries vie for leadership in available technologies and where knowledge is often readily accessible due to the open-source nature of information,

Ethiopia must not miss this opportunity. Notably, China, Brazil, and Russia are at the forefront of this sector, with companies like COMAC, which has produced over 100 ARJ21 aircraft and has already introduced 2 C919 narrow-body aircraft in collaboration with China Eastern Air. Likewise, Brazil boasts a robust manufacturing base for Embraer aircraft, and Russia showcases the Sukhoi Superjets. Ethiopia must act swiftly to join and lead along this trajectory for Africa.

Forging Collaborative Partnerships

Considering that some partnering nations are in the nascent phases of commercialization, it is the ideal moment for Ethiopia to establish manufacturing alliances. Collaborating to set up Africa-centric service centers for both COMAC and SUKHOI, as well as offering engineering and pilot training on behalf of the African continent, can prove to be a strategic move. In this endeavor, Ethiopia stands out as the prime candidate for this project in all of Africa.

Beyond Aviation: Embracing Logistics Leadership

Beyond being Africa’s aviation and administrative nucleus, Ethiopia should promptly embrace the prospect of becoming the continent’s logistics epicenter. The presence of Ethiopian Airlines, as previously mentioned, serves as an advantageous foundation. To fortify its position as the suggested Logistics Capital of Africa, Ethiopia should forge partnerships with neighboring African countries like Eritrea, as suggested by the Prime Minister. By securing access to a port and establishing an African Shipping Line, similar to Ghana’s Black Star Line initiated by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ethiopia can solidify its claim.

Pioneering Continental Connectivity

Furthermore, Ethiopia should play a pivotal role in championing the proposed Africa Railway Triangle Network Master Plan. Many recognize this plan as essential for realizing and prospering under the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Such a move would revolutionize transportation and connectivity across the continent by bridging the geographical gaps that have historically hindered trade and commerce across Africa.

Conclusion: Leading Africa’s Technological Future

In conclusion, the time has come for Ethiopia to elevate its trajectory and take the lead in technological advancement for the African continent. With its strategic positioning, burgeoning partnerships, and already established aviation and administrative prominence, Ethiopia is poised to shape the future of Africa’s technological landscape.
